SOUTH FLORIDA SENIORS IN ACTION

South Florida Seniors In Action to Provide Hours of Fun, Music, Dancing, and Health Screenings at Their Free Third Annual Seniors Community Health Expo.

The health expo plays an important part in the organization’s mission to help senior citizens socialize, combat loneliness, and stay active and healthy.

MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, September 18, 2018 – Living alone and often being alone are the leading causes of loneliness among our senior citizens.  Since 2012, South Florida Seniors in Action has been committed to defeating senior seclusion by providing group activities that maintain the elderly interacting with others. Since the organization’s focus is on seniors’ health and wellness is no surprise that their major annual event is a free Seniors Community Health Expo in collaboration with Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

In its third year, the health expo provides four hours of free fun activities for senior citizens including music, Samba and other types of dancing, and in the center of all are health screenings, and sponsors’ giveaways for seniors to enjoy past the event.   The expo will take place on October 6, 2018 (10 am to 2 pm) at North Shore Park, and Youth Center, 501 72nd St, Miami Beach, FL  33141.

South Florida Seniors in Action believes that social interaction for seniors is crucial to their happiness and health. Connecting with others helps seniors maintain brain activity.  The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that elderly individuals socialize with others, share fun interests, and participate in activities. The not-for-profit organization, founded by Eddie Sierra and Antonio Acea, plans regular get-togethers to prompt seniors to stay connected and helps senior adults combat loneliness while aiming at preventing their depression.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, depression is more common in people who also have other illnesses or whose function becomes limited.  80% of older adults suffer from at least one chronic health condition, and 50% of them have two or more health conditions placing these adults at an increased risk of depression.

Dedicated to the wellbeing of all the community’s senior citizens, South Florida Seniors in Action makes sure that their events are very inclusive of seniors with disabilities, and underprivileged seniors living in Miami-Dade County. “Every day at South Florida Seniors in Action, we get to witness the incredible benefits of staying active and purposeful in life as we age and transition in life,” stated Co-Founder and Director Eddie Sierra. The organization also hosts a monthly Farm Share food distribution for seniors and emphasizes on wholesome eating, exercise, and preventive screenings.

Seniors in attendance are not the only ones benefitting from this event. Volunteers can lower their stress and improve their well-being by spending a few hours with a very enthusiastic and exciting group of elders. Contact the organization for volunteering opportunities at the Seniors Community Health Expo or other events.

This dedicated organization also provides a free transportation program to and from their events. “In order to be more inclusive, we coordinate and provide transportation services to all of our events, so everyone can take part of our events, even those with mobility issues,” said Co-Founder and Director Antonio Acea.   For more information about free transportation to the event call Antonio at 786-526-7587.
